When there is too much ammonia in the blood, it’s called hyperammonemia (hi-per-am-oh-NEE-me-uh). Hyperammonemia can be very harmful to the body, and especially to the brain. Over time, high ammonia blood levels can lead to behavioral problems, tiredness (fatigue), and even serious health problems like seizures and coma.
A hyperammonemic crisis is when there are extremely high levels of ammonia in the blood. This is a serious condition that may lead to coma or death. There are several things that can cause ammonia blood levels to rise and cause a hyperammonemic crisis. Viral infections are the most common cause. Here are some others:
It is important to start the appropriate treatment because hyperammonemia can continue and get worse very quickly.
If you believe you or your loved one is suffering from a hyperammonemic crisis, you should go to the emergency room immediately.
Important Limitation of Use:
RAVICTI is not used to treat extremely high levels of ammonia in the blood (hyperammonemic crisis) or for N-acetylglutamate synthase (NAGS) deficiency.
Even if you’ve never had a hyperammonemic crisis, you may not be safe from the harmful effects of high ammonia levels in your blood.
If you or a loved one has a UCD, ammonia levels can go up and down throughout the day. If they stay high over time, long-term damage to the body is possible. Once a doctor has diagnosed you with a urea cycle disorder (UCD), they will discuss potential treatment options as part of your UCD management plan. Learn about ammonia-controlling RAVICTI.
